NPS was launched in Berkeley, California, in September 2000. It continues and expands on the collaborative interdisciplinary work of the Pacific Bridges Project, sponsored by the University of California at Davis from 1990-2000. Between 2001 and 2007,more than sixty artists have completed residencies in both locations.

Our mission is to foster new forms of cross-fertilization among contemporary creative communities around the Pacific.

The cities of Pacific America and the Asia Pacific constitute a dynamic network of peoples, languages, and cultures. New Pacific Studio develops innovative conversations among indigenous and migrant artists, writers, and environmental thinkers, and sponsors collaborative projects in schools, museums, and libraries.

We believe that our shared ecologies, rich indigenous cultures, and diverse multicultural communities not only provide many areas for comparative study, but may also offer creative solutions to the various environmental and cultural questions that confront us.
